Mary Baker Eddy, the founder and Leader of Christian Science writes this scientific declaration, ” Progress takes off human shackles. The finite must yield to the infinite. Advancing to a higher plane of action, thought rises from the material sense to spiritual, from the scholastic to the inspirational, and from the mortal to the immortal. All things are created spiritually. Mind, not matter, is the creator” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,” p. 256).
It is said once upon a time an anthropologist reached in an ancient civilization whose people hopped and bound like kangaroos, both ankles tied with liana ropes, their backs bent, instead of walking and running. Pondering their legend, the scientist seized the essence of their thought. They believed that all of them sprang from a common ancestor, a small mammal living in their forests. That animal was even considered a totem.
Yet, by the time, the youth was struck with amazement by the scientist’s strange way of living and sought to live like him. Many of them were banished from society. The anthropologist pursued his task of civilization through the generations. Then came the missionaries. The churches and schools produced their influences.The keystone was mentality, that transformation of thought, bringing the true mental idea of what these men were in reality. An mental odyssey, moving from the bottom of the false mental sense of existence to the grandeur of manhood. That’s only a tiny travail of redemption to wake up the dormant humanity.
The Science of being explains that man is the child of God, Spirit. ” What is man, that thou art mindful of hom? and the son of man, that thou visitest him ? You have made him a little lower than God, and crowned him with glory and magnificence. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all [things] under his feet” (Psalms 8: 5-7 The Louis Segond Version).
Christian Science teaches us that God is all that is, and held control over all, and to the extent that we understand the control which Mind held over all things, to that same extent we are able to express this control over the evidence of the senses — dominion. ”From Him we are the race” (Acts 17: 28 Louis Segond Version). Yes, indeed, from Spirit we are of the race, madest to have dominion over the works of His hands.
Nevertheless, « Jehovah said, My spirit shall not forever rule [or be humbled] in men, seeing that they are [or, in their error they are] but flesh. » Here the original text declares plainly the spiritual fact of being, even man’s eternal and harmonious existence as image, idea, instead of matter (however transcendental such a thought appears), and avers that this fact is not forever to be humbled by the belief that man is flesh and matter, for according to that error man is mortal’’ we read in our textbook (‘Science and Health,’ p.320)
We know it that the Truth’s son, visitest the world. Christ was sent to bear witness of Light, to prove the false sense of existence as unreal. Scientifically as an Examplar, Christ Jesus’ life demonstrated the immuable, and eternal fact that man – “God’s own image” – reflects the very Self of God. Man springs only from Spirit, and is everlastingly spiritual.
